Bookshops I have visited - 5: Books for Amnesty, Brighton.

Hi all, as it is pride month I decided to highlight a bookshop that I have recently visited in Brighton. Brighton is considered gay capital of the country. I love visiting Brighton because it feels safer than a lot of places I have been too. Besides Brighton has a great mix of shops including high street chains such as River Island, H&M, Pull & Bear and Bershka. The latter of the two I have no one near me anyone. Then there's the long list of charity shops scattered across the city. Add that to the list of independent shops often found down the Laines. Also down the Laines are some cool bookshops. One them is Books for Amnesty.

Books for Amnesty have a few shops dotted around the country such as Bristol, Hammersmith and Cambridge. I know that there is one in northern London and one somewhere up north but I do not remember exactly where they are. The Books for Amnesty in Brighton introduces itself as a pop art-esque pink. Often there are books out the front of the shop on a table and by the window in boxes which are heavily discounted.

Once inside you can find books from all sorts of categories. They have a good number of fiction books. One thing that I have noticed (compared to some places) is that Brighton can be pricier. Now think what you will here but I am use to going places where books are not priced on average about £3.50/£4.00. There is maybe a leeway on that one though. I go places and commonly £1/£2 is common. Books costing £3.50 or £4.00 is not a problem, it just limits how many I choose to buy. I become more wary because I get less for my money.

I do think the Books for Amnesty is a good shop with a lot to offer. This is the shop where I got two Bernardine Evaristo Novels and where mum bought me her memoir from. The only reason I knew she got it from this exact shop is because I was with her and I highlighted it out to her. Mum knows she is my favourite author, mum is a fan too.

The staff are polite and always point you in the direction of what you are after, if it is needed. Aside from that they appear a bit more "background" for want of a better phrase. The shop itself opens from 11:00 - 17:30 on every day except Sundays when they open 12:00 - 16:00.

For a bookshop, this is a strong contender. If you are ever in Brighton then take a trip down the Laines. Visit this second hand bookshop on Sydney Street as you pass it. Here is a good, opportunistic bookshop.

Until next time,

Thomas.
