My favourite horror films.
Saw? Scream? Halloween? It? These are four well known and popular horror films. Are these my favourite horror or do I prefer something a little different? Stay tuned for today's blog post as I reveal my favourite horror films...
1: Ghostbusters (2016) directed by Paul Feig.
This film starring Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig as the leading characters was incredible! I found it funny, I found it cool and I found it highly engrossing. I absolutely loved it and could not get enough of the film! Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Kristen Wiig are such a power force together as a group of four fierce leading women. They all worked well together, had perfect connection and wonderful humour. Out of all the films I have watched, this is one of my favourites.
2: Scooby-Doo (2002) directed by Raja Gosnell.
Now you may or may not consider this a horror film but this comedy horror film was so fun and sinister in equal measure. I am a massive Scooby-Doo fan and always have been. I think it goes back to my childhood when I sometimes would I get up excessively early and chuck the children's channel on. It was always Scooby-Doo, Tom & Jerry, Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies and Pink Panther. That was my childhood. The others are cool yes but something about Scooby Doo kept me hooked. Even now when I need cheering up, I can always find some old Scooby Doo episodes to actually cheer me up.
Anyway, the Scooby Doo was very entertaining for me. I found the body swap hilarious for example. The one thing I will say is that I disliked how dialled down Velma's lesbianism. It was obvious to me and I read about in an article from someone discussing how Velma was originally intended as being a lesbian character. Still that does not detract too much from the film and is one that can be enjoyed by everyone.
3: The Purge (2013) directed by Gerard McMurray.
This terrifying horror dystopian film was great to watch. I watched it when I was at college several years ago as part of my dystopian topic for my A-Level English Literature. This film filled me with dread and that was a good thing. Imagine all crime being legal for a whole twelve hour period. Yes, creepy! This film had me on tenterhooks. What a film! If you love and have not seen this then give it a watch!
4: The Blair Witch Project (1999) directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez.
This film on the eve of the new millennium was scary. Well... Not the scariest for me perhaps. This film kept me wanting to know and that kept me watching it, enjoying it too.
It stood out to because of the camera work that was used. I cannot say I enjoyed it all with the camera angles and shots although it was certainly different. If you have not seen this film then I recommend that you watch it.
5: Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost (1999) by Jim Stenstrum.
This animated family horror is a childhood favourite of mine. As I mentioned above, I loved watching Scooby Doo and this was no exception. The thing with this film is I never expected the "culprit" as it were to be who it was. Even now it throws me a little when I think back to who the guilty one was.
Not only that but this film introduced me to the Hex Girls. This eco goth rock band is my favourite animated band! Thorn, Luna and Dusk are wicked in the best way possible! I even once went as Luna to a Halloween party, minus the big red wig as I could not get one. The Hex Girls are stand outs in this film and I am glad they were brought back in the future. Without them, the film would not be as entertaining as it was. It is one I could watch again and again. You could watch this entertaining film with the kids, with your friends or on your own.
6: Jaws (1975) directed by Steven Spielberg.
Think what you may... Some can argue this is a thriller, an adventure or a mix of both. But I see this as a horror too. That nasty shark will always be an iconic villain in horror history. I thought this was an Jaw-mazing film!* It was exactly what I did not think I would enjoy and then I did enjoy it! When I first found about it and read a synopsis of what happened, my thoughts were "ok"... I cannot remember why but I decided to watch it. I think it came on the television one day. Hey, it's a good film. It's one of my horror films because yes I see this as a horror film.
7: Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004) directed by Raja Gosnell.
Normally people think that a sequel is never as good as the original film. I can agree with that statement on some films. Yet this film I cannot. I found this comedy horror adventure film to be funny, silly, spooky and a whole lot of jinkies! This film was as good as the first and in some ways better. I might even re-watch the first film and then watch the second film.
8: Hansel and Gretel: Warriors of Witchcraft (2013) directed by David DeCoteau.
I saw this horror film and how weird it was. Supernatural, horror and mystery summon up this film with the titular characters played by Fivel and Booboo Stewart. It is set at a school where the characters of Hansel and Gretel discover they are supernatural. It becomes very clear that is unclear who they can trust. I loved watching this film.
9: Scooby-Doo! Stage Fright (2013) directed by Victor Cook.
This animated musical comedy horror is Scooby Doo at its finest and I could not enjoy it any more. With so many twists and turns, the film keeps on getting better and better every single minute. Anyone can watch this, even if it is aimed at children. Tough. This is a favourite of all the Scooby Doo films.
That is my list of favourite horror films. They were not in a particular order, just random. Do feel free to let me know if you watch one and what you thought of it.
Until next time,
Thomas.
