Play review: Macbeth by William Shakespeare.
I love how Shakespeare set the tone of the play by opening the play with the three witches. We looked at that opening scene with the witches in drama at school. The year after we fully studied the whole play in English. When I had the opportunity to pick a subject for one of my university assignments, I picked witches and linked it to Macbeth. Admittedly that was not my first assignment in four years that had a link to witches.
However, the witches in the play are not the only characters providing a supernatural element which I love. In act three, Macbeth is plagued by the ghost of his late friend, Banquo. I love how Banquo's ghost comes back but only his "friend" and executioner, Macbeth saw him. To me this is just and deserving after Macbeth called for his death. Still... the witches play their play part with their little speech to both Macbeth and Banquo. This is what sets the chain of events and even leads to multiple deaths. Nevertheless, lady Macbeth persuades her husband to kill Duncan and he decides to do it. He does not stop at Duncan's death as we witness in the play. I find my questioning who is to blame but then I always come to the conclusion that multiple people play their part. It leads to a very dramatic, shocking and sinister play centred on power and murder. There are those who have power that suffer and those that want it and will go to extremes to get some power.
I love, love, love this wicked play and it is a thrilling read indeed. From the ghost of Banquo, to Lady Macbeth losing it to the dramatic ending... This is the Shakespeare play to read and so I am giving this a 10/10.
Until next time,
Thomas.
