Bookshop visit 13: Bookends, Eastbourne library, Eastbourne.
For today's blog post I am back with another bookshop visit. This month I found myself in the seaside town of Eastbourne where their local library has a second hand bookshop called 'Bookends'. The bookshop itself stocks a nice range of books that are all ex-library so I was told. A staff member told me that when they had duplicate books that ended up going for sale. What I found was that they offered a wide range of categories from fiction to cookery books and more. This of course did not surprise me considering that the bookshop is a part of the library. But the thing that I loved the most was how cheap the books are. I saw books priced as little as £1.00 which to me is excellent. I think books should be readily available to people and for those that want to buy books, having books priced like this makes it easier to access books.
Aside from the books themselves, the whole layout is done well. It is not a big shop as it within the library itself, separated off near the entrance. However, the library staff know how to maximise space. I saw books on long shelves that offered the chance to fit many books on them, I some books put on stands and highlighted. These books were varying in genre which was sensible. One of those books, was a book that I purchased. It was a book that I had wanted so was delighted to find it. The book was Who's Afraid of Gender? (2024) by the feminist author Judith Butler. Their book alongside Gender Trouble (1990) were two I wanted on my shelves. I had looked at the latter while in my studies at university. It was Who's Afraid of Gender? that I managed to snatch for only £2.00. The book is a recent book, in hardback and in a very good condition. I could find no damage of marks to the book. What's more is how the design on the front utilises the colours/shades of the non-binary flag - white, yellow, purple and black. This was a lovely touch!
So if you ever want a good bookshop, presented well with a nice range at amazing prices, you can always visit Bookends if you are in the area. Take a look at the two books I bought!
Until next time,
Thomas.
