New Year short story: Fireworks...

Today I am giving you a short story about a woman, named Grace who wants a good year, but things do not always go to plan. This is my short story entitled Fireworks. I hope you enjoy it.

Fireworks...

The fireworks go off and I am still awake. I am struggling to process the news that was delivered at the dinner party. I wanted to start this new year as good as possible. I kept telling myself that this year would be better than the shipwreck of a year I have just said goodbye to. Nan died, my aunt Janine threw Uncle Morgan out for being a cheating pig (which ruined Dan's birthday), one of children was followed home and attacked for not being white... Need I go on?

I just thought that this year, perhaps things could be different. I wouldn't have to see racist uncle Morgan in my life anymore. How can someone be racist to their own family? Dan, my half-brother was so distraught that his first birthday without his wife was ruined. Dan finally seemed to be getting his life back on track after losing Rina last year. Oh, and Morgan thought that was for better, considering how she was 'a gold-digging bitch' so he called her. Ever since she was dying, Morgan and Dan have been feuding. But Janine insisted he came to the meal because she needed to say something with everyone there, him included. At least now we know what. He is cheat, just like my father always has been. He cheated on my mother when he found out she was a locksmith because 'that's a man's job'. (He did also slap her round the face even if she never wanted to admit it.) Even if I was young, I was still there and I saw it. Too bad she didn't get chance to padlock his trousers shut!

At least I have support from Tara. She's my everything and I love her so much! I still remember our wedding day from six years ago. There was me, her, my brother Dan, Dan's partner Rina, his daughter Chloe and my children River and Martha. It was a beautiful affair with only the people who care. Mum wanted to come but she was away in the Philippines and her flight got cancelled. She had a thirty-six hour delay and only just got back from the airport as we had the after meal. Dan picked her up from the airport and she came straight to our meal with gifts for everyone. I am so glad she made the right decision leaving dad and getting him arrested. Him and Morgan are the two brothers we are glad to cut out of the this family.

Then to find out casually from mum that the my dad is going to be free after what he did to her. The man who made mum do what she never wanted to and then to force her to keep it, the man who kept her scared so she would never leave him. I do wonder how she finally snapped? What pushed her over the edge? I think it must have been the realisation that he was her attacker all those years ago. Thirty-six to be precise. Well, it be when Halloween comes this year. That is how old I am going to be. Though I can never actually say what he did to her, I can never forget either. I wanted this year to me by year but I guess this is all my life is going to be, a reminder to what he did for all of us...

I hope you liked my short story here.

Until next time,

Thomas.
