International Women's Day!
It came and it went? Or did it? Why does celebrating women happen one day a year? Women face bigger challenges then men in society. I mean I cannot speak as a women, only as someone who is non-binary. But I know plenty of women who have had struggles that men could never have faced... This International Women's Day I want to shout out to some of these women...
First and foremost, I have to give a big shout out to all the trans women in the world. It is tough to be non-binary in society so I can only imagine how demanding and gruelling society makes it for trans women. I see you all and I accept you as you are. You should be able to be your authentic selves and live freely without fear or judgement, or horrific people trying to ruin your lives bit by bit.
Next up I want to mention all the women who are POC (people of colour). I see stories of racism and have heard racism from people, which I never agree with. Whether this is institutional racism, unconscious bias or just plain racism in the street, it is out of order. I welcome anyone regardless of their race or ethnicity.
For my next shout out, I am talking to the women of Palestine. My heart breaks for all of us for none of you deserve to have suffered, suffer or continue to suffer. Regardless of whatever has happened, is happening or will happen, no one deserves to die. I hope something good happens soon. I cannot what happens but people (like me) boycotting and putting pressure on those who are complicit is what I can do.
Now I want to address the disabled women whose lives can be challenging because society does not accommodate them but rather dismisses them. I know that no one with a disability should suffer because of that disability or disabilities.
Then there are the women who are mothers, keep going! To those who did not want to be mothers, keep going too! No one has a right to judge you, this is your decision. To the women who wanted an abortion - it your body and your choice. To the women who could not become mothers, if you wanted to then I am sorry. Also, to the women who lost their mother's, I am sorry too. Grief is hard whoever we lose. [P.S: to anyone, not just women, who gave birth - you've got this whatever you decided or decide...]
Finally, to all the women who are victims of abuse by men. I cannot even begin to understand how that horrible that feels. The thought that so many men get away with it breaks my heart. All those men should bare a huge amount of shame, even if they never will...
To every women across the world, keep going even if you do not feel like it. Women have created so many amazing things from the DNA model to the computer compiler, space station batteries and even chocolate chip cookies! To all the women trying to take women's rights away, shame on you. To all the other women around the world, thank you.
Until next time,
Thomas.
