Opinion piece: What has the world come to? (Trigger Warning: discussion of SA.)

Hello all...

Now I know that women's rights have been at threat for a long time but when does it ever stop? Today I found out that 62 million men have accessed a r*pe "academy" site that teaches men how to drug and SA men and how to get away with it. I am horrified! I am disgusted, my stomach instantly started turning as I repulsed at the thought of that many men. Since when did one of the most heinous and violating crimes become treated as "a subject" to teach men about. It is grim that people find this acceptable...

But then again, misogyny continues to rise. Look at all the number of rich and powerful men who have gotten away with committing crimes such as SA listed in the infamous files to do with the U.S.A. That country's president continues lording it over as if he is Jesus. Then we have people in this country including a certain disgraced ex-prince. There's also the people who want these sorts of disgustingly rich men to stay in power. The leader of the political party Reform UK, Nigel Farage likes Trump as do other right wing politicians such as ex-Conservative leaders Liz Truss (ex-PM who Farage had a posh lunch with a few weeks ago) and Suella Braverman (who defected to Reform recently). Reform themselves want have us not part of the European Human Rights Court as Braverman said. But with is withdrawn, then there will not be protections against workplace discrimination for example. This could lead to unfair discriminations for being disabled or woman or LGBTQIA+.

Then we have the other concern in which Nigel Farage have had communications with anti-abortion groups from the U.S.A that helped overrule Roe vs Wade in the U.S.A, thus meaning abortions are now not a constitutional right. No one should have a say over their own body except themselves. Reform would not even pay for more than two children if a woman on benefits is assaulted and left with more than two. Horrible! Let us not forget that Farage also allowed James McMurdock to join Reform when Farage knew he has previously been jailed for assaulting his then girlfriend in public. Farage tried to deny that he knew of course!

Aside from rich and political figures, misogyny is on the rise from other men. I see stuff all the time that I disagree with as someone who is non-binary AKA not a woman. What gets me is when you get few women come across as misogynistic themselves. Someone who comes to mind is the author of the Harry Potter books, who shall not be named. When questioned on how she would police trans women in toilets she thought that most people would be sensible but if in doubt then to photograph someone in the toilet. How does that help? Trans women should be excluded from being seen as women. Recent groundbreaking research found that Trans athletes had no physical advantages over their cis counterparts after undergoing Hormone Therapy. The Harry Potter will ignore this but then I would never trust anyway; she invited Epstein to one her Harry Potter film premieres even if she is trying to deny it. I do not trust her. She never speaks out for disabled women, Palestinian women etc. I would rather pay attention to a real feminist.

I like to consider myself a feminist and will stand up for any and all women regardless - trans, BIPOC women, disabled women, LGBTQIA+ women and any other woman. Hopefully things will get better.

Bookshops I have visited - 3: Oxfam Bookshop, Coventry.

Welcome back to my blog everyone. It is that time of the month where I give you the ins and outs to another bookshop that I have recently been to. This time, it is the Oxfam Bookshop in Coventry city centre. When I was on my travels, I found myself in Coventry. Now having lived and studied in the West Midlands, I knew about this bookshop. Funnily enough this was not my first visit here. Just as I remembered, they have a nice range of books and music despite being on the slightly smaller side. I noticed they still had a little collection of Doctor Who stuff! I am a big Doctor Who fan. Anyway, as I went nosing around, there was one book that caught my eye. It was this book: Sculpted: Poetry of the North West  (2013) edited by Lindsey Holland and Angela Topping. There is an introduction by David Morley who I have read before as a poet, teacher and editor. Bookshop visit 11: Lions Charity Bookshop, Hailsham.

Hi! Sorry for the delay in the blog post, the internet keeps playing up for me so I could not post yesterday when I planned to. For my blog post I am off on another bookshop visit. This time I found myself in the East Sussex of Hailsham where down Market Street in Hailsham. It is near North Street and High Street which is good for people visiting by bus or catching a train and then a bus to Hailsham as it has no train station itself. When you enter the bookshop it can come across as quite small. Despite this, I see the bookshop as small and mighty. You never know what you are going to get and that is what I like in a bookshop. Normally, it is fiction that I go for though they have some other stuff as well. I will say that if you want something specific then you cannot guarantee to get, though that often goes with a lot of second-hand bookshops. I must point as well that paperback books are priced at £1.20 which to me is a steal! Can you imagine wanting to get some Margaret Atwood books...

Fictional book review: Cat's Eye (1988) by Margaret Atwood.

It's me again... Your favourite book reviewer back with another Margaret Atwood book to review. This time I thought I would tuck into Atwood's 1988 novel Cat's Eye . This novel is gripped with spectral memories of the narrator's past, it is a bildungsroman. A bildungsroman is just a novel that goes through a character's life, from being a child, to growing up as a young person to becoming an adult. Great Expectations  (1861) by Charles Dickens is another example. Anyway, the narrator, Elaine is haunted by Cordelia who I will not give too much about her away. This novel threw me, many times. We had Elaine and her various friends. First we were introduced to Carol, then Grace and finally Cordelia. But it is Cordelia, who's presence is felt throughout the novel. The thing is, I cannot understand why. Without giving too much away, Cordelia was hardly being nice to Elaine and I just expected that as Elaine grew up that she would move on; that she would not have Corde...
